New Laser Treatment Gives Hope to Suffering Toenails
Toenail fungus—usually a yellow discoloration and thickening of the nail—can be more than just a petty annoyance. According to the Mayo Clinic, fungus that attacks the toenail can cause the nail to become brittle and separate from the nail bed, resulting in pain and an unpleasant odor. For some people, particularly those with diabetes, there is also the risk of more severe health issues. Current treatments have been less than optimal, but a new laser treatment offers a less invasive and more effective approach.
CURRENT TREATMENTS OFFER LIMITED RESULTS
Without treatment, this type of fungal infection can persist indefinitely and in some cases, the damage can become permanent. The problem, says podiatrist Dr. Gregory Birch, is that traditional treatments, such as over-the-counter creams and ointments and oral medications, are not always effective. In fact, topical treatments almost never work and oral medications have a success rate less than 55 percent. In addition, many of the prescription medications can cause severe side effects such as skin rashes and liver damage. For some people with severe infections—or those with diabetes or other conditions that could make a fungal infection more dangerous—removal of the entire nail may be necessary.
NEW LASER SURGERY
An alternative recommended by Birch is a new laser treatment that is as much as 88 percent effective and lacks all the side effects associated with other treatments.
“Here’s a chance for people, especially those in the later stages of life, to avoid side effects and possible interactions with other medications they may be taking,” he said. “It is advantageous for diabetics too. Many times diabetics lose sensory perception and don’t realize their toes are affected, yet they are three-to-four times at risk of developing complications, secondary to fungus. Now we can help them eliminate this risk factor.”
According to Dr. Birch, a wave of light from a laser attacks only the fungus and does not affect either the skin or nail. However, the results take time, as the patient must wait for the nail to grow out in order for new, fungus-free nail to replace the old infected nail.
All 10 nails are treated—even if there isn’t any fungus visible on them—and the treatment takes about 30 to 40 minutes. It is also relatively painless.
