Orthopedic Surgery

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Orthopedic surgeon dr. Vladimir b. Shur takes pride in his ability to return patients to their functional lifestyles should they experience any orthopedic trauma. He specializes in general orthopedic surgery and treats various orthopedic problems, from broken bones to sprained ligaments and torn tendons. He compares his job to that of a carpenter – both have to be good with their hands and both must possess excellent motor skills.

Patients are usually referred to Dr. Shur when they experience any type of joint pain or extremity injuries. Following successful joint replacement and fracture fixations, Dr. Shur's patients are often able to walk the next day. He and his team improve patients’ lifestyles and extend the lives of their elderly patients by strengthening their hearts and lungs.

FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL JOINT REPLACEMENT AND FRACTURE FIXATIONS, DR. SHUR'S PATIENTS ARE OFTEN ABLE TO WALK THE NEXT DAY.

Dr. Shur recommends resistant weight exercises for patients of any age. This type of exercise keeps bones strong and prevents or delays osteoporosis. He also strongly recommends walking for at least 30 minutes per day.

Dr. Shur's goal is to help establish a Bone and Joint Center at Maimonides Medical Center and an Orthopedic Center of Excellence, which would enable him and the orthopedic team to further enhance the services they offer and treat a greater amount of patients.

DR. SHUR'S EXERCISE TIPS:

1) Avoid overhead lifting as it may damage shoulders -- arms are made for climbing and carrying, not lifting.

2) When doing lower back exercises, keep your back straight. Tilt forward slightly and tuck in your abdominal muscles to reduce stress on your lower back.

3) Squat; don't bend, when picking up something heavy.

4) When doing leg exercises, don't bend your knees more than 90 degrees, as that can seriously damage your menisci or ligaments.

5) Avoid running outside on pavement or any other hard surface, as it places a heavy impact on your joints and back. Instead, run on a treadmill, because it has a shock absorber that the pavement doesn't.

Comparing doctors job to that of carpenter is not acceptable as Carpenters mistake can be rectified but any mistake by doctor can be fatal.
