Oh, the horror of braces. So many of us experienced it, the dreaded metal all over our mouths, that jackhammer-like tool that rammed the bands onto our teeth, the screwing, the tightening, the banding, the moaning. What for many was worse than all the physical discomfort, however, was the fear of how we would be perceived. “Metal mouth,” “Iron Man,” “Jaws,” and “Brace Face” were just some of the nicknames we endured. WHAT IS INVISALIGN?
Basically, Invisalign is a brand of technology (made by Align Technologies) that uses plastic, instead of metal, to straighten teeth. A series of clear, removable liners move your teeth over time, giving you the smile you want. The liners look like tooth trays, similar to what you may have used to whiten your teeth. Your dentist takes impressions, x-rays, and photographs of your teeth, then sends them to Align Technology. Technicians use the impressions to create a three-dimensional model of your teeth. They then move your teeth on-screen to where they should be, creating your perfect smile. Once they have it, they use software to break the moving process into stages. The orthodontist reviews the results, and once he/she approves, the company ships back a set of liners, one for each stage. You wear each one for about two weeks, during which time it moves your teeth just a little. Then you change to the next liner and wear that one for two weeks, and so on. Typical treatments take about a year, and involve 20-30 liners.

DOES INVISALIGN WORK FOR EVERYONE?
Whether or not you’re a candidate for Invisalign depends on the types of orthodontic issues you have. Certain complex bites or cases of misalignment require the old metal standby, which, admittedly, are smaller and less visible than they used to be. 
However, there are many common conditions perfect for Invisalign. These include overly crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, teeth that are severely rotated, missing teeth, overbite, crossbite, or if you have a relapse after traditional braces are removed. Your orthodontist can tell you if you’re a good candidate for this new solution. 
If you do choose to use Invisalign, doctors recommend you drink only water when you have them on, to prevent staining. Otherwise, you typically remove them when eating and drinking. It’s also important, since the liners are removable, that you wear them for the recommended hours each day to get results. Unlike metal braces, which you can’t remove, Invisalign requires the disciplined cooperation of the patient to be effective.
