As often happens in science, researchers “stumble” upon findings that change the world. Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark of the University of Lund, Sweden, did just that in 1952. He and his team were studying how bone heals, and in the process found that titanium—unlike gold, silver, or other materials previously tried—could be integrated into living bone without long-term inflammation or rejection by the immune system. In 1981, Branemark published his findings, and in 1982, the Toronto Conference in Clinical Dentistry created guidelines for implantology—the practice of permanently attaching bridges and individual teeth into patients’ mouths through the use of titanium roots.

HOW DO THEY WORK?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. A dentist surgically places it in the bone socket of the missing tooth (while the patient is under anesthesia). As the jawbone heals, it grows around the titanium post, anchoring it to the bone. This process can take anywhere from 3–6 months. A connector post is then attached to the titanium to hold the new tooth—which is just like a regular crown.
